Life expectancy is the number of years that an individual is expected to live in a specific context. We are talking about one of the indicators selected by the United Nations to assess development in different countries of the world.

The World Health Organization (WHO)  informs that life expectancy differs depending on the place of birth and the places where a person evolves. Thus,  countries with a higher development rate have a higher life expectancy  than underdeveloped countries.

Margaret Chan is Director General of WHO. She informs that “ the world has made great strides in reducing unnecessary suffering and premature death from preventable and treatable diseases”. Yet she also maintains that progress has been uneven. The best thing to do about it is  to help countries achieve universal health coverage. 

The gap between developed and underdeveloped countries is growing deeper. It also has direct repercussions on the quality of life. The European Health and Life Expectancy Information System (EHLEIS) is the European system responsible for monitoring changes in life expectancy. It is part of BRIDGE-Health. Its fundamental objective is to create a European Health Information System integrated into the third EU Health Program 2014-2020.

And improvement of the quality of life of residents of the European Union. The ideal is indeed to increase healthy life expectancy. It is also about avoiding diseases, especially those that are chronic or that put lives in danger.
