The importance of conscious communication

Communication with our environment begins in the maternal womb: we react to stimuli, although these responses are not reflected. Our communication takes shape as we grow. We practice it, so that it changes to respond to certain social models. So the time comes when we can talk about intentional communication and conscious communication.

Communicating our needs facilitates survival, making connections with those around us. It is something natural that arises in us spontaneously.  However, we have recently been talking about another type of communication: conscious communication.

Mindfulness, or conscious communication, allows us to be aware of the present. The way we communicate with the environment is manifold today. Some studies recommend focusing on a single task rather than succumbing to the modern temptation to multitask or have divided attention. This concerns both the production and the reception of information. Communicating is not only about producing information, it is also about knowing how to interpret it.

What is mindfulness?

We often know what we are saying, we strongly believe in our point of view, but we divide our attention when receiving messages. So let’s think about it. Are we really listening or are we just waiting for the other to finish before we can speak? Are we aware of our non-verbal communication? For better or for worse, the latter conveys a lot of the messages we communicate.

To be a conscious speaker is precisely that, it is to be an actor in all our communication. It is not an easy process. It must start at school, where children practice certain exercises related to conscious communication. For example, exercises in empathy and acceptance of others are a good way to introduce this subject to younger people. Emotions are fundamental in our daily life. Mastering them takes a lot of patience and practice, even if we sometimes forget it.

Practicing mindfulnes s, or being mindful, involves not indulging in anger or irritation when we communicate with others. Knowing when to let your emotions run wild is a sign of conscious communication. Emotional intelligence will help us in this task. An emotional intelligence that manifests in the realm of our emotions, as well as in the acceptance of those of others.

How to practice conscious communication?

The first step to take when we want to be conscious speakers is to understand that  communication is a process. Wanting to be mindful  doesn’t mean being mindful . This competence covers many areas:

  • Spelling and the right dialectic: a person who makes spelling mistakes, bases his language on expressions or does   not structure his speech correctly  is a speaker who weighs down his own communication. The verb is one of our first business cards. Taking care of it is always important.
  • Lack of emotion in speech: Communication is not just about conveying information. It will be more difficult to reach the recipients if we only produce information. We will win if we imbue it with emotions, hints and empathy with others. The effect will be immediate. The audience will feel how they are part of the communication process. We will thus gain his involvement, his attention. It also increases the likelihood that our message will be saved in its memory.
  • Non-verbal communication : Non-verbal communication refers not only to body language and other types of body language, but also to the implicit or pragmatic information we share with our interlocutor. So let’s try to take both aspects into account: it is important that our  body language  indicates that we are open to dialogue and other ways of thinking. The  pragmatic elements  are also fundamental. The implicit language or emotions, the social codes that we share or in which we are different must constantly be kept in mind to better adapt to those with whom we communicate.
  • Responsibility for feelings: We don’t all feel the same. We don’t express our emotions in the same way either. If we want something from others, we have to find the most appropriate way to ask for it.

Finally, ê be conscious speakers makes us more effective speakers. It makes us more empathetic. This allows us to express ourselves in a way more suited to our social context and to create stronger social bonds. We are talking about a difficult process, as this will involve, among other things, identifying and acknowledging our current mistakes. But the results are worth it.
